Community Spotlight: Norfolk NHS Health Checks
7 Jul 2025
A major health initiative was launched in Norfolk, offering 36,000 free NHS Health Check appointments to eligible residents. Delivered by Reed Wellbeing and commissioned by Norfolk County Council, this service aims to help people take control of their health and reduce their risk of serious conditions like heart disease, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes.
What is an NHS Health Check?
The NHS Health Check is a quick and simple 20–30-minute assessment designed to spot early signs of health issues before they become serious. It’s available every five years to people aged 40 to 74 who don’t already have a pre-existing vascular condition.
During the check, you’ll receive:
- Blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose tests
- BMI and waist measurements
- A review of your lifestyle and family history
- A personalised risk score for cardiovascular disease
- Tailored advice or referrals based on your results
Who can get one?
You’re eligible if you:
- Are aged 40 to 74
- Live in Norfolk or are registered with a Norfolk GP
- Haven’t had a Health Check in the last five years
- Aren’t already being treated for a condition like heart disease, diabetes, or stroke
Why it matters?
The COVID-19 pandemic caused many people to miss their routine health checks. This new service is designed to catch up on missed appointments and ensure everyone has the chance to get their “mid-life MOT.”
“It’s so quick and simple,” says a spokesperson from Norfolk County Council. “Often the advice given after an NHS Health Check involves simple, sustainable changes that can have a big impact on your health.”
