A healthier future after 20 years of trying – Adrian’s story
26 Oct 2026

For more than 20 years, Adrian struggled to quit smoking. Although he made several attempts to stop, periods of stress often led him back to the habit. After being involved in a road traffic accident that resulted in a fractured sternum, he was referred to Smokefree Norfolk. That referral proved to be a turning point, helping Adrian achieve a smoke-free life for good.
"I had tried to quit many times over the last 20 years, but never successfully. Earlier this year, I suffered a fractured sternum in an accident, and every time I coughed it was agony. The doctors referred me to Smokefree Norfolk, and I'm so glad they did. I'm now smokefree, the coughing has stopped, and I feel so much healthier."
SmokeFree Norfolk provides free, personalised support to help people stop smoking and stay smoke free. Through one-to-one coaching, behavioural support and access to stop smoking medications, the service helps people overcome cravings, build confidence and develop strategies to manage triggers. The service offers a supportive, non-judgemental environment where people can access encouragement throughout their quit journey.
"At first, I didn't think the service would work, but I felt I had nothing to lose. I chose patches and a mouth spray to help me manage cravings, and having support from my coach, Pam, made a huge difference."
"The hardest part was dealing with the withdrawal symptoms. There were times when it felt very difficult, but I kept reminding myself that the cravings wouldn't last forever and that being healthier at this stage of my life was worth it."
"Pam's passion for helping people quit smoking was incredible. Her encouragement and support helped me stay on track, even during the tougher moments. The service was very well structured and gave me the confidence to keep going."
"I've now been smokefree for 12 weeks and I'm much more active. I've also treated myself to meals out with some of the money I've saved, which has been a great reminder of the benefits of quitting."
"My focus now is staying smokefree and continuing with the positive changes I've made. Looking ahead, I genuinely don't think I will ever be a smoker again."
